NEW SPIRITAN PARISH IN SÃO PAULO.
The Irish Spiritan Group in São Paulo, Brazil have decided to add a new chapter to their already long missionary presence with those most abandoned and marginalised in society, while supporting the local church in the Metropolitan city of São Paulo and in the interior of other states. The group have over 50 years of missionary work, experience and confidence of the people and church leadership. However, after a long period of reflection and in keeping with our charism it was decided to open a new missionary front and parish (Most Holy Trinity) in the northern peripheral area of Perus in the Deanery of Brasilandia and still within the archdiocese of São Paulo. Recently returned missionary from Ireland Fr Brendan Foley CSSp (Sligo) was given the task to lead the mission and take the pastoral role of pastor/parish priest. Fr. Elson Paulo CSSp (Cape Verde) and Niall Colgan CSSp (Co. Louth) are the pastoral administrators with specific tasks between youth, house visits and formation courses. We form the new Spiritan community in the parish. The parish house is extremely modest and is situated within a local neighbourhood called the “the corner of humility” among the people. Some of the fotos below are from today’s celebration of the Spiritan installation of our pastoral roles of ministry with the local bishop Dom Devair (a former bank manager and took his confirmation in his late 20s!). The people of the parish welcomed the Spiritans with open arms and a historical day for all concerned. Fr Brendan has already worked in the peripheral area of the city of São Paulo for almost 10 years, and taking TY transition students from Spiritan Colleges in Ireland for immersion trips to Brazil and Bolivia. He worked for almost 6 years in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia and was called back to Ireland for vocation ministry and animation in youth work and other creative projects. He recently completed an MA in International Development with the KDSC/Maynooth University. Now, with a great heart and bags of energy he has decided to work in São Paulo, a timely gesture of missionary availability. We wish for the Irish Spiritan group and the new Spiritan Mission in Perus many spiritual blessings and missionary joy that comes from living and working with the poor and marginalised of society. It is a reflected choice of the group to take on this new missionary challenge which will bring a new energy of renewal, a new conversation, a broader Spiritan identity and service of mission - New Wine for New Wineskins - a solidarity of hope with those we are called to serve. We wish them well in their missionary availability and pastoral ministry. DV.
Fraternally in the Holy Spirit.
Present at the celebration was Fr John Kilcrann CSSp (Co. Leitrim), a member of the Irish Provincal leadership team representing the Irish Province.
Just remembered to send my correct address in Brazil. It’s the safest I’m told.
