Richard Purcell OCSO

Fr Richard Purcell is Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey in Waterford.  Originally from Dublin, Richard holds a BA in Music, French and Italian from UCD and he also studied voice, piano, organ and flute before joining the Cistercians at Roscrea in 1997.  He completed further studies at Maynooth and Oxford before Ordination in 2005.  Richard has been involved in liturgical music for over thirty years, performing, conducting and composing and is the director of the Brendan & Cronan Cluster Choir in the diocese of Killaloe.  He is also a member of the Advisory Committee on Church Music of the Irish Episcopal Commission for Liturgy.

He is the former Abbot of Mount St Joseph Abbey and without the support of that community we would not have MMT. The location is so peaceful and the community and staff are so welcoming. We know that when the bells ring out for prayer each day we are included in their prayer.
Richard is Spiritual Director, mentor, teacher and friend to all at MMT. He has a wonderful gift in conducting our choir that leaves no room for doubt!!
He will lead our opening Liturgy… with a difference… on Tuesday and give us some spiritual food for thought to start our week. On Thursday at 4pm he will take us on a tour of the Monastery and this is a real treasure of knowledge and sharing of their home.
On Friday evening we will join with the Community in their Night Prayer in the Monastery which again is a true sharing of their prayer with us during our week.
